The 2024 UN International Day of People with Disabilities, celebrated on December 3rd, carries the empowering theme: “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future”. This theme underscores the vital role that individuals with disabilities play in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable world. It calls for their active participation in decision-making processes, ensuring their voices are heard and valued. Nothing about us without us
Globally, people with disabilities face numerous challenges. According to the UN Disability and Development Report 2024, they experience higher rates of poverty, limited access to education and employment, and significant health disparities. For instance, individuals with disabilities are more likely to face barriers in accessing healthcare, leading to poorer health outcomes, Additionally, they often encounter difficulties in securing adequate housing and face social exclusion.
In Ireland, the situation mirrors these global challenges. People with disabilities in Ireland experience higher rates of poverty and social exclusion compared to the general population. They face systemic barriers in education, employment, and healthcare. The Disability Federation of Ireland highlights that many disabled individuals struggle with inadequate support services, leading to a lack of independence and community inclusion.
Above may go to some way explain why we still struggle in Ireland when it comes to employment participation of people with disabilities compared to our EU neighbours. The employment rate for people with disabilities in Ireland is 32.6%, which is almost 20% below the EU average of 51.3%. This highlights a substantial gap in employment opportunities for people with disabilities compared to their non-disabled peers. The disability employment gap in Ireland is 38.6%, significantly higher than the EU average of 24.4%. This gap is even more pronounced for women with disabilities, who face an employment gap of 45%.
These statistics underscore the need for continued efforts to create more inclusive workplaces and support the employment of people with disabilities.
This year’s theme is a call to action for all of us to support and amplify the leadership of persons with disabilities. It is a reminder that creating an inclusive society benefits everyone. By addressing the systemic barriers and challenges faced by people with disabilities, we can move towards a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Let’s celebrate the contributions of persons with disabilities and commit to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all.
